Reports To: Landscape/Horticulture Superintendent
Job Type: Full-time Seasonal, May 1 to October 31, 2024
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8:00 – 5:30, Friday 8 – 4:30, 1/2 hour unpaid lunch. Occasional overtime

The Opportunity
The Horticulture Lead is responsible for working with & coordinating the day-to-day operations of a horticultural crew. This includes assigning tasks to crew members, ensuring the proper use of equipment and materials, monitoring progress on projects, and maintaining a safe work environment. The lead must have strong leadership skills, the ability to communicate effectively, and a deep understanding of horticulture techniques and practices. As a member of the OGW team, you will work directly with our Superintendents and Project Managers to create innovative solutions to support our teams and clients. This role will contribute significantly to drive business value and improve the performance of the company.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Industry related certification – diploma, degree or equivalent classification preferred
- 2+ years’ experience in the horticulture industry (use trade related tools & equipment; identify plants and evaluate plant health; install turfgrass; trim & prune hedges, trees, shrubs & perennials; assess, prepare and amend soil/beds; plant and maintain beds & related garden areas; provide advice on plant selection & care as needed)
- 2+ years’ experience in a supervisory position in the horticulture industry preferred
- Experience with trade related equipment – sod cutter, rototiller, weed whip, saws, drill, etc.
- Vehicle/trailer operator experience including material & equipment loading & securement
- Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
- Excellent time management, material management and organizational skills
- Reliable and punctual
- Collaborative, problem solving and analytical skills
- Adapts well to challenging environmental conditions
- A team player with the ability to work with diverse trades
- First Aid and completion of courses in Trade specific safe practices, preferred
- Ability to accept and provide direction, initiate feedback, and perform with accountability
- Access to mobile technology to utilize digital work programs e.g. project & timesheet apps, etc.
- Valid Driver’s License & ability to transport themselves to and from sites
- Must be flexible to working overtime
- CSA approved PPE must be worn on site
- OGW logo’d clothing must be worn during working hours
Responsibilities Include:
- Promote and maintain awareness and compliance of Health and Safety in accordance with company and industry standards
- Utilize expertise to ensure daily/weekly milestones, project objectives & goals are met
- Monitor and effect productive daily work procedures, resolve problems & client concerns with the assistance of field team and Superintendent
- Support Superintendent with daily communication and onsite accountability to project objectives, schedule and trade related business strategies for productivity and efficiency
- Supervise and manage any employees or subcontractors on site daily
- Ensure accurate installation of all horticulture materials effectively and efficiently
- Review, monitor and ensure ordering and delivery of job specific materials and supplies
- Ensure, operate & provide basic daily maintenance for all equipment, trailers & tools
- Maintain, evaluate, and improve quality constructions standards
- Ensure timesheets, receipts, slips & other paperwork are completed in detail & submitted daily
- Encourage and provide mentorship for training and apprenticeship
