Solar Energy: Saving Money and the Planet!
The time has never been better to look at a solar energy system. The technology has improved in leaps and bounds over the last decade, the investment is more affordable than ever, and with Government incentives on the table, it’s even easier.
Solar energy is an important part of our sustainable future
If you’re reading our blog, you probably know that we’re all about sustainability at OnGrowing Works. We strive to use the most sustainable materials and practices to build indoor and outdoor spaces that are energy and water efficient, and gentle on the environment. So it makes sense that we want to talk about a clean energy system that can power your home with no harmful emissions or pollution. Once installed, a solar powered system can help to eliminate, or significantly reduce, the need for fossil fuels.
That’s why we’ve partnered with Simple Solar on a number of recent projects. As Calgary’s solar specialists, they’re passionate about solar energy and make a complex subject easy for their customers to understand.
Two types of solar energy
There are two main solar energy systems: photovoltaic and thermal.
Photovoltaic (PV) systems
PV systems convert sunlight into electricity using PV panels. They can be tied into the grid so that any excess electricity produced is fed into the grid, for which the homeowner is paid the value of the electricity. Off-grid systems require a battery in which the excess electricity can be stored.
Thermal systems
Thermal systems use solar thermal collectors to turn sunlight into thermal energy or heat. This can be used for domestic water heating, space heating or pool heating.
Many homeowners choose one system or the other, depending on their needs. If you would like to be completely energy independent, you’ll want to consider a combination of the two.
The benefits of solar energy
Here are six reasons why everyone should choose solar:
1. Reduce your carbon footprint.
Harness the power of Alberta’s bright, abundant sunshine to heat and light your home on even the coldest days. No more need for fossil fuels to power your home!
2. Save on utility costs.
You won’t miss those electricity and natural gas bills when you start generating your own power for cooking, heating, lighting and more.
3. Avoid energy price increases.
Once you’ve invested in a solar power system, it will keep working for you for years to come, and when your neighbours are complaining about their rising power bills, you won’t have to worry.
4. Receive government incentives.
From installation grants to carbon tax credits, the government is keen to encourage solar power adoption. Chat with us to see what’s available right now.
5. Feel great about yourself!
What better feeling could there be than knowing your home is warm and your lights are bright because of your own, cleanly-generated green energy? Give yourself a pat on the back for helping save the planet.
6. Create a sense of security.
In a volatile world where our power supplies are vulnerable to the vagaries of the weather or worse, you can feel secure in the knowledge that you’re producing a sustainable, dependable source of energy that you don’t rely on anyone else to produce.
Whether you’re planning a renovation or building a new-home, we know you’ll want to consider including a solar energy system. It’s the sustainable energy of the future. Contact us now to learn more.
